It’s Official – I have fallen off the planet

One of the biggest challenges of being a small business owner is finding the hours in the day to get things done (your life coach calls this time management). We have to balance marketing with actually providing services and remembering to make accounting entries, Ugh! Many of us look up from a project only to find we’ve been too busy to market, and thus now have no work. Never a good feeling!

There is a plethora of coaches who make a living off this very problem. Despite a forest's worth of self-help books on the subject and many 3-day seminars in time management - we all fall seem to fall into this trap. This is the reality small business - there are limited resources spread really thin. I wish I had the magic checklist to offer as a solution, but if I did I wouldn’t have fallen off the planet . . .

First of all - I do know when to prioritize and outsource. If it's not your core competency, consider outsourcing. Leverage resources around you, and focus on what makes money for your business.

Secondly, keep in mind this happens to all of us. Let it be a learning experience. However, if this becomes a continuing trend, then yes something may need to be done. Maybe it’s a business coach, or an organizer, or . . .

Until then, be aware of it, figure a plan to deal with your competing demands, and remember feeding the dog comes before everything else. . . I think there’s a dog under all this paperwork. Has anyone seen the dog?
